“My girlfriend was washing her hair when this tiny thing suddenly fell out of her head, and we had no idea what we were looking at.”

“My girlfriend was washing her hair when this tiny thing suddenly fell out of her head, and we had no idea what we were looking at.”

We stood frozen under the bright bathroom light, staring at the tiny object resting in her palm. At first it almost seemed ridiculous — this little 1 cm thing causing so much panic — but the longer we looked, the worse our imaginations got. Every theory felt more horrifying than the last: some kind of parasite, an insect egg, something alive that had been hiding in her scalp. She kept asking if it twitched. I kept saying no, even though I wasn’t completely sure myself.

After nearly an hour of zooming in on photos, searching online, and comparing every unsettling detail, we finally figured it out: it was a crushed tick, misshapen from water, shampoo, and time.

The relief hit instantly, but it didn’t erase the unease. The thought that it could’ve been there unnoticed for days made our skin crawl. We checked her scalp twice more before bed, washed everything, and couldn’t stop thinking about how easily something terrifying can stay hidden right in front of you.
