The “Take It Down Act” represents a major federal step in addressing the misuse of AI technology. Passed in the House with a 409–2 vote, it criminalizes the creation and distribution of nonconsensual AI-generated sexual content, including deepfake pornography that has increasingly affected students, professionals, and minors.
The legislation also places new obligations on online platforms, requiring them to remove reported content within 72 hours or face penalties. It further strengthens victims’ rights by allowing legal action against individuals who create, distribute, or host such material.
The bill has drawn rare bipartisan support and has been publicly backed by President Trump. Supporters say it establishes clearer boundaries around digital identity and privacy, emphasizing that a person’s likeness cannot be used without consent in AI-generated content.
