Found sitting in the oven after Thanksgiving dinner…

We gathered around the open oven staring at the object like detectives at a crime scene. It was roughly thumb-sized, partly smooth, partly jagged, with a thin strip of metal running through the center. At first, nobody could figure it out. One person thought it looked like melted machinery, another guessed it was part of a kitchen tool. The longer we looked, the stranger it seemed — whatever it was, it had clearly been through extreme heat and somehow survived.

Then someone noticed the tiny metal wheel buried inside the melted shape, and suddenly it all made sense. It was a disposable lighter. It had likely been left on a baking tray or tucked in the oven by accident before Thanksgiving dinner preparations began. Hours of heat had warped the plastic into a bizarre glassy lump, leaving behind the metal frame like a fossil. What really hit us afterward was how dangerous it could have been if the lighter had burst under pressure. Since then, checking the oven before cooking has become a mandatory holiday tradition in our house.
