When Neville opened a bag of Aldi broccoli, he was met with a moment of pure panic—a snake was curled among the florets. Already frightened of reptiles and caring for a vulnerable mother-in-law and a disabled son at home, he immediately thought about what could have happened if he had simply tipped the contents onto the kitchen counter.
Instead of handling it alone, he quickly called his sister for help, placed the snake into a secure tub, and drove straight back to the store. Staff at Aldi were visibly shaken by the incident, and the reptile was later transferred to Dudley Zoo, where keepers first believed it to be a juvenile ladder snake.
However, herpetologist Dr. Steven J. R. Allain later suggested it was more likely a harmless viperine water snake, which may have been accidentally collected in a Mediterranean broccoli field and survived the journey in cold storage.
While experts noted the snake posed little real threat to humans, Neville said the experience left him deeply unsettled, especially considering what might have happened at home. Aldi issued an apology and compensation, but he maintains the offer doesn’t reflect the emotional impact of what arrived unexpectedly in that bag of vegetables.
