We share this heartbreaking news with deep sorrow regarding this remarkably talented actor.

He was a familiar face behind the bar on Will & Grace, quietly bringing warmth, humor, and steady presence to every scene. Now, beloved veteran actor Charles C. Stevenson Jr. has passed away at the age of 89.

According to his son, Scott Stevenson, he died of natural causes on January 19 in Camarillo, California.

For fans, Will & Grace stands as one of television’s most iconic sitcoms—known for its sharp writing, groundbreaking representation, and unforgettable ensemble cast. Among them was Stevenson, who portrayed Smitty, the easygoing bartender who became a subtle but beloved part of the show’s world.

Though never at the center of the storylines, Smitty’s presence added comfort and familiarity, grounding the chaos around him across 12 episodes spanning several seasons.

Stevenson’s career stretched far beyond the sitcom. A true working character actor, he appeared in numerous films including Men in Black, Ed Wood, The Naked Gun, Pleasantville, and Ghost World, along with guest roles on a wide range of classic television series such as Cheers, Murder, She Wrote, Everybody Loves Raymond, The Office, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Born in Piedmont, California, he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War before studying at UC Berkeley and eventually pursuing acting—a path that led to a long and steady Hollywood career.

Remembered by family as humble and good-humored, Stevenson often joked about frequently playing clergy or officiant roles, describing his job as “marrying or burying people.”

He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy defined not by fame, but by consistency, professionalism, and quiet excellence.

Charles C. Stevenson Jr. may not have always been in the spotlight—but his presence helped shape many of the stories audiences continue to love.
