We later discovered it was an old maritime tool known as a “fid,” once commonly used aboard sailing ships. Sailors relied on it to separate rope strands, create splices, and loosen tight knots—tasks that could mean the difference between safety and danger at sea.
Holding it, we couldn’t help but imagine life on the open ocean: weathered hands working under harsh winds, salt in the air, and crews depending on their ropes to hold firm through storms. What first seemed like a forgotten, meaningless object slowly revealed a story of survival and seafaring skill.
It turned out to be more than just an old tool. It was a small piece of maritime history, something once essential in a world of long voyages and hard labor. Now it rests in our home as a quiet reminder that even the most unassuming objects can carry the weight of entire lives and journeys within them.
