Chaos erupts at White House Correspondents’ Dinner as gunfire breaks out near ballroom, Trump evacuated

What was meant to be a rare evening of cordiality between President Trump and the press quickly turned into a crisis inside the Washington Hilton. As more than 2,000 attendees filled the ballroom, guests suddenly ducked under tables when shots were reported near the security checkpoints, triggering immediate panic.

President Trump, along with Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and senior officials, was swiftly escorted out by Secret Service agents as part of an emergency evacuation procedure. In the chaos, one agent was reportedly struck in the chest area, with his protective vest absorbing the impact and preventing serious injury.

Outside the main ballroom, witnesses described an armed individual—later identified as California teacher Cole Allen—attempting to assemble a long gun in a service area before moving toward the event space. He was quickly confronted, tackled, and restrained in the lobby within moments.

Inside the building, journalists and officials sheltered in secured rooms, many attempting to contact family members while the lockdown was in effect. Trump later described the gathering as unexpectedly “unified” despite the events and called for an end to political violence. Organizers indicated the dinner would be postponed as authorities continued their investigation and the venue dealt with the aftermath of the incident.
