Life can be incredibly beautiful, but it can also be painfully unfair. That unpredictability is part of what makes every story so powerful—and sometimes so heartbreaking.
At just 18 years old, Brianna Rawlings was 17 weeks pregnant and excited about becoming a mother when her world was turned upside down. What had been dismissed as normal pregnancy symptoms was ultimately diagnosed as a rare and aggressive blood cancer: NK cell leukemia.
Faced with an impossible decision, Brianna was told she could either begin urgent treatment—putting her baby at risk—or delay it to give her son a chance at life. She chose to continue her pregnancy, holding onto hope that her baby would be born healthy.
Tragically, complications forced doctors to deliver her son, Kyden, three months early via emergency C-section due to a serious infection. He lived for just 12 days, but in that short time, he was deeply loved.
Brianna later shared how those moments meant everything to her—holding him, counting his fingers and toes, and speaking to him like she had throughout her pregnancy. She described those days as the most special of her life.
After Kyden’s passing, Brianna remained determined to fight her illness. For a time, there were signs of hope—her strength seemed to be returning, and plans were made for further treatment. But her condition worsened, and a planned bone marrow transplant had to be canceled.
Doctors then turned to an experimental treatment, and her family worked tirelessly to afford it. Despite their efforts, Brianna was only able to undergo two rounds before the disease took her life on December 29, 2018.
She was just 19 years old.
Brianna’s story is one of unimaginable loss, but also of profound love, courage, and sacrifice. Her strength and devotion to her son leave a lasting impression—one that continues to move people and raise awareness about the realities of cancer.
Her memory lives on through the love she gave and the fight she never stopped fighting.
